Our story

spanning 3 generations

Private hoteliers since 1979

Our mission is to create a place where you can recharge and enjoy unforgettable moments. For three generations, we have lived hospitality with passion, respect with warmth, and shared our story with heart and soul.

Then and now, the contact with our guests and the family atmosphere are at the heart of what we do. Karin and Peter Hettegger have been your hosts at DAS EDELWEISS Salzburg Mountain Resort since 2018. Behind them stands the entire Hettegger family and an excellent team, each giving their best every day and contributing to the success of the resort.

We are here for you, close and personal. Whether with questions, wishes, recommendations, or a friendly drink at the Alpinbar.

Welcome to the family!

1978 - 1979

The idea was born...

Hospitality has deep roots.

The foundation was laid: senior boss Peter Hettegger, at the age of 17, acquired the first plot of land together with his parents, where a small guesthouse with 14 rooms and a café was built.

He was one of the few who signed contracts like these at such a young age with the bank.

Meanwhile

In winter on the lift - in summer in the forest

To fulfill his dream of becoming a hotelier, Peter worked in the forest. During this time, his father supported him, as he worked both in the forest and at the lift.
This hard work as a woodcutter was crucial because, in the beginning, renting out rooms could only serve as an additional source of income.

1984 - 1985

One man´s vision

Inspired by a dream and full of passion, Peter took over his father's share, and the guesthouse was expanded to 70 beds.

We warmly welcome the first regular guests, who return every year with incredible loyalty, both in summer and winter, to the EDELWEISS, and live out the true meaning of hospitality.

1989

The dream grows...

The Hettegger gene evolves, and it quickly becomes clear that we are always looking towards the future.
The original vision was to accommodate group travellers. We quickly realised that we would need more rooms for that. With an extension, we can now accommodate up to 100 guests.

1989 - 1994

Attractions that our guests experience

Experiences that make a lasting impression: dancing until the early hours and forming friendships for life: the new dance bar "Rauchkuchl" at the hotel.  Even today, people in the Großarltal still talk about the legendary nights.

The opening of the Panoramabahn cable car right next to the hotel enriches the leisure options for our guests and provides easy access to unforgettable experiences.

Spreading the word

The valley of the 40 alpine pastures

Far from websites and social media, we promoted the Großarltal and EDELWEISS with the Stieglalm at trade fairs. We spent nearly a third of the year impressing people with the picturesque valley and its 40 managed alpine pastures. There was cooking, storytelling, & convincing.

1993: with the expansion to 140 beds, our hotel and thus also our EDELWEISS team is getting bigger and bigger.

1995

The family gets involved

A brother of 11 siblings lives out what it means to be a host.

It doesn't take long before the brothers Sepp (construction management), Hans (F&B), Lorenz (service) and Daniel (active programme & building services) get to work together and stick together.

1999

There is no longer a trace left of the former guesthouse

Our guests should feel comfortable and be able to relax. With the construction of the spa area and the beauty and vitality residence, we were among the largest in Salzburg at that time.
Each family member contributes their strengths.

2006 - 2010

In the heart of Berchtesgaden

A visionary like the ones you read about in books: Peter Hettegger senior is also responsible for the birth of the Edelweiss in Berchtesgaden.

In 2010, the former "Hotel Post" became the EDELWEISS Berchtesgaden, which was run by Lisi & Peter's daughter Martina Hettegger . Her brother Stefan Hettegger actively supports them - especially by managing the kitchens of 5 different catering establishments.

TRIP TO BERCHTESGADEN

2018

New journey…

DAS EDELWEISS Salzburg Mountain Resort is born

Peter's son, also named Peter, and his wife Karin take over the management of the resort.

With great attention to detail and respect for the pioneering work done before them, they embrace the challenge and transform the historic resort into a holiday destination of the future.

The construction in the mountain

A resort for generations

Completely redesigned, DAS EDELWEISS shines in a new light. Outstanding, individual service and a warm atmosphere with feel-good factor for couples, families & friends are the goal.

After an 8-month closure period and construction into the mountain, the hotel is developing into a resort: an idea from 2005 is finally becoming reality.

A wellness resort is being built

Diversity & uniqueness were developed by the Hettegger family.

  • EDELWEISS Mountain Spa on over 7,000 m²
  • Separate Family Mountain Spa
  • Unparalleled roof garden landscape "Top of the mountains"
  • In-house natural cosmetics line
  • EDELWEISS Kinderwelt

Everything new: from the family for families

No appointments, no deadlines and no tasks: just take time for the most important things in life. Time for the smallest circle, your own family.
For our little guests, DAS EDELWEISS transforms into an exciting play paradise.

New luxurious family suites, our Family Spa and children's areas for all ages complete the perfect family holiday.

2024

A vision is completed

The future is born from passion: where 45 years ago our dear grandparents opened a small guesthouse with 14 rooms and a café called Edelweiss, now stands DAS EDELWEISS Salzburg Mountain Resort: where luxury feels like home...

Our Adults Only Suites create spaces of absolute and highly exclusive tranquility.

Everything is new, only one thing remains: our rustic tiled stove, where our grandparents "always sat".

THANK YOU

Our greatest strength: The family

Without our family, DAS EDELWEISS would only be half as charming and inviting: Elke ensures a smooth reservation process with her warm personality, Hans excels in the F&B sector, Alex delights with culinary highlights, Daniel keeps everything running as the caretaker, and Lorenz creates unforgettable experiences in service.

Our two Sepps played a crucial role in shaping the hotel with their tireless dedication on the construction site. Especially Sepp Senior, whose passion left a lasting mark on DAS EDELWEISS—his warmth, unwavering support, and incomparable presence are deeply missed every day...
