Our Story

THE EDELWEISS Salzburg Mountain Resort: A vision passed down through generations.

Our mission is to create a place where people can draw pure strength and experience special moments. Every member of our family lives out their passion and strengths to the fullest every single day.
Welcome to the family!

For 3 generations, we have preserved hospitality within our family.

1978 - 1979

The idea is born...

Hospitality runs deep in our roots.

The cornerstone was set when senior owner Peter Hettegger, at just 17 years old, along with his parents, acquired the first piece of land. On this land, they built a small guesthouse with 14 rooms and an inviting café.

He was undoubtedly one of the few at such a young age to sign contracts of this nature with the bank.

To fulfill his dream of becoming a hotelier, Peter worked in the forest. Meanwhile, his father supported him, working both in the woods and at the ski lift. This hard work as a lumberjack was crucial, as renting out rooms could initially serve only as an additional source of income.

The vision of a man

Inspired by a dream and filled with passion, Peter took over his father's share, and the guesthouse was expanded to 70 beds.

We warmly welcome our first loyal guests, who return to the EDELWEISS with incredible dedication every year, both in summer and winter, allowing us to fully embrace our role as hosts.

The dream grows...

The Hettegger spirit develops, and it becomes clear that we always look to the future. The original vision was to accommodate group travels. We quickly realize that we need more rooms for this. With an expansion, we can now welcome up to 100 guests.

Memorable attractions for our guests to enjoy.

Experiences that create lasting memories: Dancing until dawn and creating lifelong friendships: The new dance bar "Rauchkuchl" in the hotel. In Großarltal, even today, the legendary nights are still talked about.

The opening of the cable car, called Panoramabahn right next to the hotel enhances our guests' leisure options, providing easy access to unforgettable experiences.

Spreading the word

The Valley of 40 Alpine Huts

Far from websites and social media, we promoted Großarltal and EDELWEISS with the Stieglalm at trade fairs. We dedicated nearly a third of the year to impressing visitors with the stunning valley and its 40 charming alpine pastures. There was cooking, storytelling, and lots of convincing.

1993: With the expansion to 140 beds, our hotel and, consequently, our EDELWEISS team continue to grow.

One brother among eleven siblings leads by example in embodying the spirit of hospitality.
It doesn’t take long before the brothers Sepp (Construction Management), Hans (Food & Beverage), Lorenz (Service), and Daniel (Activities & Facility Management) join forces and work together.

We want our guests to feel comfortable and relaxed with us. With the construction of the spa area and the beauty and wellness residence, we became one of the largest in Salzburg County at that time.
Each family member contributes their strengths.

A visionary straight out of a storybook, Peter Hettegger is also responsible for the birth of EDELWEISS in Berchtesgaden.

In 2010, the former "Hotel Post" blossomed into EDELWEISS Berchtesgaden, which is now operated by Martina Hettegger, daughter of Lisi and Peter. Her brother Stefan Hettegger provides strong support, especially through his management of the kitchens for five different dining establishments.

Embracing the future...

DAS EDELWEISS Salzburg Mountain Resort is born.

Peter’s son, also named Peter, and his wife Karin take over the management of the resort.

With great attention to detail and respect for the pioneering work that came before them, they embrace the challenge of transforming this historic resort into a future vacation destination.

Without our two Sepps, DAS EDELWEISS would be only half as charming and inviting. With tireless dedication on the construction site, they have transformed the hotel into what it is today.

But it’s the entire family that makes the difference: Elke ensures smooth reservations with her warm personality, Hans delights in the F&B area with culinary highlights, Danei keeps everything running as the facility manager, and Lenz creates unforgettable experiences in service. Each member brings something unique to provide our guests with a special retreat.

Completely redesigned, DAS EDELWEISS shines with a fresh glow. Exceptional, personalized service and a warm atmosphere with a feel-good factor for couples, families, and friends are our goals.

After an 8-month closure and construction into the mountain, the hotel evolves into a resort: An idea from 2005 finally becomes a reality.
